I wish I knew then what I know now.
The pain and loss of function I experienced in high school prevented me from reaching my full potential. Following a trampoline accident in gym class, I began having frequent headaches and radiating pain and numbness into my right arm. My parents had me follow the advice of our family doctor and manage the pain with over the counter medication and rest. The symptoms were covered up for short periods of time but continued to re-surface, usually following physical activity. It was only after my mother received her first chiropractic adjustment that she considered that it might help me too. I remember being skeptical and concerned. How can some "Chiropractor" help me when the "Doctor" who brought me into this world couldn't help?
After meeting Dr. Coelho and having my first chiropractic evaluation, I started to reconsider my opinion of chiropractic. Then, when he "adjusted" me for the first time, I became a "believer". He not only relieved my pain, he found the cause of my problem and corrected it.
While under his care, he offered advice on lifestyle changes and suggested that I consider becoming a chiropractor.
I appreciated Dr. Coelho's belief in me, but my first love was psychology. I decided to enroll at Saint Ambrose College in Davenport Iowa. I graduated in 1977 with a BA in Psychology. Following several years of working blue collar jobs (nobody was hiring a psych major) and many injuries later, I rediscovered chiropractic.I started my education at Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1983. It was the most challenging yet rewarding endeavor I have ever undertaken. Although the classes were difficult, I knew they were necessary. The one thing that inspired me to see it through was the camaraderie of my friends and peers. We were going through this together. We all ultimately had the same goal... to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. After three years of continuous study and many "ups" and "downs", I graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1986.
Our practice philosophy is to help each individual achieve optimal health and function. We accomplish this goal by detecting and reducing spinal joint fixations (subluxations) which can compromise nervous system function and prevent or limit your body's innate ability to heal itself.
We attract patients from all walks of life; including health conscious individuals, injured persons (auto, work or sports) and those who have not found resolve through drug therapy or surgery.
We met while attending Palmer Chiropractic College and married soon after graduation. Although initially we practiced apart, we decided to pool our expertise to provide a team approach to our practice. We find this approach most beneficial to the patient.
We have one son who has been under Chiropractic care his entire life.
We enjoy gardening, hiking, biking and boating in and around the Pacific Northwest.
Jean Scarzello, DC
I couldn't believe it when I learned that the philosophy of Chiropractic resonates with my personal philosophy of health and well being. All my life I had a deep sense that true health came from within. I knew I had to learn more.
It wasn't until after I received my Bachelor's of Science degree and a certificate to teach High School Science in 1981 did I learn about the holistic and natural approach of Chiropractic care. I applied and was accepted to Palmer College of Chiropractic also known as the "Fountainhead". There we studied over 4,500 hours of subjects including advanced courses in human anatomy and physiology, bio-mechanics, spinal anatomy, neurology, nutrition, x-ray, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the Palmer Clinics to name a few. I graduated in 1987 and went into practice soon thereafter.
I enjoy learning and consider myself a lifelong student. I continue post graduate studies in nutrition, natural healing, chiropractic techniques and patient communications.
We maintain our health through regular spinal adjustments, health conscious diet, routine exercise including stretching, strengthening and swimming. Our diet consists of local and organic foods and nutritional supplements. We also practice semi annual month long purification cleanses.
